“Breaking the News —” an eye opener exhibition”.
This is epic. What an incredible piece of work by the British Library. Their brief, to look back on 500 years of news — this thing that’s come to govern our lives.
From the period of the enlightenment ( which doesn’t emerge on a plate, but is contested) to Artificial Intelligence.
When I got the call two years ago to ask if I would accept being an advisory board member, naturally I said yes. The British Library has assembled an exemplary list of academics to help guide it, and yes I had imposter syndrome, but that quickly dissipated.
This hasn’t be done on this scale before. So what will you learn? Well I can’t tell you at the moment, but will do after the private viewing. It’s been an experience seeing it take shape in our meetings over the many months, and being a part of rigorous and meaty discussions with fellow members.
Tagged as an eye-opener exhibition about the stories that shape us. I suspect it’ll attract considerable attention when it officially opens ( next month).
What I can share in advance is the accompanying book, Breaking the News. It is a collectors item. One for any reader wanting to be stimulated and perhaps find answers.

I contributed one of the pieces that looks at the language of news and BLM, in “The fight for Identity in the Media”. It’s a long read about 4000 words, but I hope it adds to the debate around diversity and journalism. See you there!
