Finding Ideas in Sports Coaches to Solve World Problems
A scene I captured with my Masters students problem-solving a real life issue within the NHS. This what they’d be doing on a real assignment, so we make them experience it.
Having worked in Soho (Dotcom I) for reactive.net; I was launch editor for Justgiving.com, and work in start-up culture in academia for nearly 20 years.
↳ I throw a range of real-life scenarios at them.
↳ We use coaching techniques, rather than lectures. Have you ever thought Sports players have coaches, musicians have coaches, several professionals too, so why isn’t coaching the norm in higher education?
↳ Part way through their work, we present them with new challenges requiring them to down their original idea
FRAMEWORK
↳ The approach allows for an exchange of applicable knowledge e.g. AI, cinema journalism, with people skills e.g. leadership, empathy etc.
↳ Cohorts learn how to generate multiple ideas and using design, systems and cultural thinking scale up the concepts
↳ Importance of team building, turn-taking and peer support is learned.
PRODUCT
↳Game playing is used to unlock inhibitions, idea generation and co-creation.
↳ Learn how to document their journey capturing successes and failures. Readers are drawn to a hero’s journey revealing flaws. Different to Influencers journey which tends to show polished odyssey only.
↳Getting them to engage with professionals as mentors, as well as pass it on.
SUCCESS
We’ve used latest tech from coding, VR, AR, to AI for cohorts to create the ff:
↳ VR training film for trainee teachers. Apparently a significant number of trainees leave teaching
↳ An App for International students to source local produce from their home countries, to cook
↳New independent banking system for many people who banks won’t take on, because they don’t fit banks criteria
↳ A mood App to show educators how a student is feeling in class
↳Platform for LGBTQ+ for local reviews of services and products
FORWARD
↳ Using more and more AI to problem-solve
↳Using Gen AI to capture stories.
↳Using work/ study force to demonstrate economic impact.
