Get innovating like it’s 2004: Re-launching a game changing year.

A radically innovative platform streaming immersive diverse stories, which also would lead to a new form of storyteller.

That’s imminent. But first let me take you back almost twenty years ago and the launch of Viewmagazine’s The View.

In 2004 I encoded, designed and produced a platform that streamed proto cinema-journalism stories in video and text. In 2004 there was no YouTube.

On The View, I showed:

  • never been seen material of Heavy weight boxer Lennox Lewis. I was his videojournalist when he fought and beat Mike Tyson in the US.
  • Prof Shirley Thompson had completed her groundbreaking symphony New Nation Rising, which years later Prince Charles would be handed a copy and would add to the reasons for her scoring for his investiture.
  • Kim Jack-Riley had been managing director of the Source magazine. New pictures of Bob Marley emerged shown on the platform. And I built the the concept of the Outernet (later reported by Apple) which led to an invitation to contribute creatively to London’s Olympic 2012.

The View would go on to win one of the most coveted awards in the US, the Knight Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism ( https://lnkd.in/eirYeCvp) , which judges said “foreshadowed the future”. 2004/5 would be a wild time in Net innovation.

In the years ahead I’d set up a programmes for Masters students (against fair resistance) and clients like Press Association and Financial Times to share knowledge of creating platforms, producing immersive films, or both. I’m grateful too to the many international organisations where I was invited to present my ideas.

2024 feels like 2004 all over again. Cumulative knowledge from The View and the ensuing years linking up with Apple, Google etc. has culminated in the launch of the journal Media Hyphenates — Innovators who build platforms in AI, VR, and looking to tackling world solutions.

These are different types of emerging journalists reframing the future in the way The View did in 2004, guided by exemplary mentors. In the journal edition download you can learn about AI-non fiction docs, and read the amazing work of Applied Storytellers.
