Video comes in a myriad styles. Even documentaries can be sectioned into different genres. At the LAB, I look to introduce cohorts to around half a dozen genres and different talent. In a future post I’ll look at mobile in a big way, but for the meantime, these do some framing painting with ones and zeros.
On assignment in New York, I was reminded of friend Rob Chiu’s amazing OFFF promo. If you’ve not seen this before you’re in for a treat. Very few people I know attain this level of storytelling in a manner which comes near to a Jackson Pollock piece. You may not see it. Art within the eye-sort-of-thing.
Rob, a one-man band and deservedly broke through into the higher end of commercials, but it all started in his study room, influenced by films like Man on Fire which we’d share.
This deconstructive approach was the stuff of experiments, paintings pointillism or literature’s elliptical in media res. Sometimes the idea is to chase the video; play and play again. This from the early part of my career trying to give an idea of what my website as like; life flashes before my eyes.
Someone else I have come to respect enormously with his different creative style, both as a writer and video maker, Adam Westbrook. I have known him since he graduated City University and marvelled at how he’s self taught himself into these exquisite pieces.
And then this, storytelling par excellence by Elliot Rausch, a selfless talent always ready to share. This, if you’re not a wailer, is about to indelibly stay with you.
And then finishing on an explainer. This thing I call cinema journalism.
If @medium did video eh?
Just what would it look like? Thoughts?
