The ingenuity of Spider-man:Across the Spider-Verse can’t be emphasised enough.

You might think it’s not your sort of film for all sorts of reasons, but you’d be wrong. Trailblazing films, like Art, habitually reshape aesthetics and narratives after critical exposure.

A typical example comes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). Moments later a platform would launch allowing users the ability to mimic the film’s style. TikTok now rules the world.

It’s the exposure from repeated use and hence greater take up. Sometimes the press does your bidding for you. Other times marketing drives interest.

Around 2014, I had a similar reaction when I made a series of shorts, and started training new generations of storytellers in the art of cinema journalism.

Cinema journalism is a fusion of journalism ( factual) and cinema ( creativity). You’ve heard of cinema documentaries right? Well cinema journalism is a matrix of storytelling styles. You’re like this journalist, director, artist, all rolled into one — with the ability to fast turnaround stuff.

One of the most memorable times was presenting in Denmark over four hours. That’s where I am in the photo below, at one of Denmark’s prime film schools where their journalists have gathered.

Danish journalists go to a lot of conferences said the organiser, so they’re not just being polite when they say they’re happy with your performance. That made me chuckle. You can read more about those experiences across the world here

If you’d like to know more about innovating journalism and factual storytelling drop me a line or an invitation to speak at Gyimahd@Cardiff.ac.uk.
