UK in meltdown. Chancellor sacked. House of Cards awaiting fall. One min commentary.
My Ghanaian mother tongue (twi) surfaces in moments like this: “Aboa bi beka wo a, ne ofiri wo ntoma mu”. It means if say an insect is going to bite you it’ll do so from your cloth. PM Liz Truss should change cloths frequently. Her once friend will have a big bite.
So, the highest ranking Brit-Ghanaian in public office, is out. I frame it this way, not ignoring his mistakes, but that those (inc Ghanaians), who were not Torries wished him a fair wind as he took office, but then it all went south.
But has PM Liz Truss now triggered her downfall? She created her problem. Her advisors gave her a way out. Sack your Chancellor. His public letter makes clear his support, but how easy will that be? Pride and setting the record straight as history looks to blame him may be too much.
Small matter, but it irritated me how broadcasters/ journalist can’t pronounce Kwasi Kwarteng properly. No bother now! But for the record phonetically it’s Kwaysee Not Kwar-Zee. KWA in Kwarteng is NOT the same in Kwasi. #ghanaian #sacked #kwarteng
Lessons?
1. Humility — listen to people outside your bubble
2. Well worn theories about trickle down economics are well worn
3. Kwarteng’s sacking sets a precedent, that you next to the CEO aren’t safe if it goes Pete Tong.
