What did he say? What would you have said? The Hamiltons.
That moment, the cameras pan to a father speaking to his son.
The power of this photo resides in the occasion. Lewis has just lost the F1 title in circumstances that are not without controversy.
And for this moment seared into memory unfolding in slow motion, Anthony Hamilton pulls up to his son. Some commentators used the words, “console”. Maybe, he might have even recharged him, buoyed his spirit, a mix of strong words and fatherly love.
I’ve seen it in other supreme sportsmen. In 2001 I was Lennox Lewis’s videojournalist/ filmmaker when he fought Tyson, having followed his career ups and downs. Supreme sportsmen indeed need consoling, but behind the gritted gruff of a trainer or dad, there’s a message to deliver.
And that’s what I imagine Anthony doing; a low hummed message, slowly delivered, confidently. In many ways a gracious intelligent Hamilton would not feel the need to criticise Verstappen. That’s for Mercedes’s Toto Wolff to take up with F1 director of racing.
I’m a father to a highly competitive son, who is soon to grace screens in what he does. We’re so proud of him. I imagined if I were Anthony Lewis, what I might say to my son.
You are the role model, and millions of people are watching you. What you do next will influence many and help shape their understanding of you and even their own lives and competition, particularly for people of colour. Lead. Lead. Be gracious in this. Show love and humility in the jaws of this. For this is the test, we’ve spoken about. And you are much loved. You will be back stronger. Now my son take to the stage and show them why you are a champion.
