What would you tell yourself thirty years ago?
You might recognise the pose, the head tilted down in an attempt to look cerebral whilst looking through one’s eyelashes — that smokey look.
This is what happens when your photos about to be taken for your radio presenter’s profile 30 years ago. Yes, 30 years at BBC GLR.
Recently, we stumbled upon this huge cache of tapes of the show and photos. Goodness I thought, what would my self back then thought of events now?
Yesterday I was taken to see a Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s gig by Prof. Jonathan A.J. Wilson PhD DLitt. Back then in the 90s I went to quite a few: Living Colour, Fishbone, Cameo, and we’d meet them backstage.
I went to a Roy Ayers gig and afterwards went back to his hotel to interview him. Myself 30 years ago was respectful, but a tad blase. With Cameo we went to a club afterwards where they jammed until 4' O’clock in the morning. Fela Kuti asked me to take him for a meal and then we went clubbing. With Prince , I didn’t go to any afters, but I did get to try on his jacket.
Yesterday’s gig was a reminder how nothing should be taken for granted. Simply amazing, and now I’m telling this kid thirty years ago, who’s forgotten what it was like, that we should do some more, and more.
Question is, what would you tell yourself of thirty years ago?
Here’s the interview where I crash Roy Ayers ( Running Away) hotel
I love the way he calls me by my first name.
This is cheeky! I’m interviewing the former president of Zambia Kenneth Kaunda about his guitar skills.
