Whatabouttery I would say a deliberate obfuscation, or from ignorance in answering a question by raising one’s own oblique question designed to sidetrack a cogent answer. It often starts with… what about…? There’s always a spectrum, I feel, to how arguments might often be presented as binary. Hence, sometimes someone might genuinely need a “what about” to accrue context. Its persistence, as a pattern, is where cause for concern arises, I think.
